These are the blog Posts that tell you about the people that I have been to see speak.
Pentagram ya the big guys, they are a creative business that I have looked up to since the start, so stepping inside that in the doors of the greats was an amazing experience.
So you’re probably thinking ‘why were you there?’, And the answer is to hear one the best sound designer speak about his work.
A Man called Yuri Suzuki who is a sound artist, designer and electronic musician, he has worked for people like Disney, Will.i.am, Yamaha and Google. Most of his life has been dedicated to his inventions, such as the work he did for google. Which was an AR app that made anything into an instrument, this was a project to make music more accessible called ‘AR Music Kit’. And probably the most known piece of his work was created for AIAIAI which was a project to make the city sound better, it was simply a taxi that distorted the sound of the environment and made it sound better with sound manipulation.
But the project that got him on TV was the OTOTO Board this is a device that takes anything that can conduct and makes it make a sound, this means that you can make music out of anything.
He has done so much more work so, so for more detail and to have a look at his work got checkout his site;
The David Carson talk was in one word simple inspiring, and it is defiantly something I will remember forever. There are so many things that he said that made me really think. The First thing he said that made me think was the fact that the best thing a designer can do is capture the environment around them and take things in and uses them as inspiration, Travel, and experience is the best inspiration.
He said was the fact that a piece of design work have two messages the first message is what does it communicate when the viewer looks at the design work and then what does the work communicate then the viewer reads or consumes the information in the design and do these two messages say the same thing or do they say different things.
He is a massive believer in not letting the computer do all the work and thinking about what you are doing and not just letting things like presets do the design work for you. Also, he said about in editorial design one of the worst things you can do is start the projects with lots and lots of grids.
It was the most interesting to hear what he had to say about working with some of the big names he has worked for in his career. There were a few things about what he has picked up in his time such as; never be scared to show the crazy ideas and the simple ideas to the client, Client love it when they see there design move and come to life. Also, he mentioned that if you want to go crazy go really crazy and if you want to go simply go really simple because in the middle no one will see it.
A few other things he mentioned were;
- leave stuff up to the mind so not say it all.
- simple is not boring
- don’t go to the simple solution because everyone can do that.
- Be open to the wrong process leading you to the right one.
AND ALWAYS TRY AND MAKE YOU WORK A LITTLE BIT OF YOU.
